Novelty lamps are used largely for decoration purposes instead of being used as light sources. Many people love collecting novelty lamps, since these decorations often come in various interesting and beautiful designs. A table lamp, accent lamp or floor lamp can be considered as a novelty lamp when it sports a specific theme or shape, such as cartoon characters, Oriental designs, patterns or sculptures, and even animal shapes.

Many novelty lamps that come in strange yet amazing designs, such as the fiber optic lamp, plasma lamp and lava lamp, are actually the most popular novelty lamps today. Among the three, the lava lamp is perhaps the most intriguing novelty lamp because not many people have an ideas about how they work.

The lava lamp is said to be the brainchild of Edward Craven Walker, an Englishman who came up with the original concept and design for the novelty lamp during the 1960s. Together with his business associate named William Rubinstein, Adolph Wertheimer purchased the American rights for the novelty lamp and introduced it as "Lava Lite." It became a hit during the 1960s and 1970s, popular for its bright colors and shifting display. Today, lava lamps are still being produced by the Lava World International, and they continue to be popular decorative pieces that never fail to amaze people.

Lava lamps or are chemistry wonders that continue to puzzle many people today. The original lava lamp "recipe" remains a company secret today, but chemistry provides a basic idea on how these novelty lamps work. A lava lamp is comprised of a substance that creates the floating "blobs", a substance where these "blobs" can float in, and a lamp for display and illumination and generating the heat that causes the "blobs" to float.

The plasma globe or plasma lamp, is another example of interesting novelty lamps. Like the lava lamp, the plasma lamp is not used as a primary light source, and serves as a decoration or display only. The plasma lamp, which emerged after Nikola Tesla invented the Tesla coil, is characterized by the alternating electrical currents that form beams of light.

Night lights are another type of novelty lamps that have been steadily gaining popularity. Although night lights serve as a light source for indoor areas such as stairways and doorways in the dark, they are also considered as novelty lamps since night lights come in various attractive shapes and designs such as flower vases, animal shapes, seashells and stars. An accent lamp, table lamp or floor lamp is also used by many people as a night lamp since they are often dim enough to illuminate a certain area without causing sleep disturbance. A fiber optic lamp is also often used to dimly light an area in a room or house, which makes it a good night light.

These are just some of the well-known novelty lamps that continue to amuse and amaze many people today. Although novelty lamps are not significant light sources, they will remain popular for as long as people find them beautiful and interesting.
